What A Night!

Friday, November 21st, 2008

“What A Night!” is Harry Connick. Jr’s new Christmas album (released Nov. 4) and it is so good!  He came to Columbus on his holiday tour, and I got tickets.

Sorry to those in the west - his tour is only in the eastern half of the country.  Seriously - what a night!  He was awesome!  Best. Concert. Ever.  Of course he sang lots of holiday songs, but the middle portion was full of classic jazz/blues.  Favorites included: Mason Street Blues, Hello Operator, and Bourbon Street Parade.  Lucien Barbarin performs with Harry and is part of his band.  He is one of the world’s best trombone players and it was awesome to hear him play!  He is the nephew of Paul Barbarin, who actually wrote Bourbon Street Parade and pretty much known as one of the fathers of jazz down in New Orleans.  Lucien sang with Harry on Santarific and Hello Operator… very cool.

The Beazers went above and beyond and took our kids…over night!!  Not only did Nate and I get a great night out, but a quiet night in!  Thanks guys!

Pot Sticker Night

Monday, November 17th, 2008

We made pot stickers with the kids on Saturday night.  They thought it was the coolest thing ever!  Sam wouldn’t stop eating the filling, so his pot stickers didn’t make it past the kitchen counter.  Magei was actually pretty good at making these things.  She was a pro with the won ton wrappers.

We really like this recipe.  The filling is simple: tofu (extra firm), cabbage, carrots, green onions, seasame seeds, seasame oil, salt, and ginger.  Very good!

Dress Shirts for Little Boys

Monday, November 17th, 2008

A few people at church have asked me how I keep Sam’s shirts tucked in.  First, I want to say that these are my favorite dress shirts for Sam:

I get them from the GAP, but they only come in infant sizes.  With this as my inspiration, I have transformed Sam’s other dress shirts into body suites.  It’s not the prettiest thing out there, but it is functional…and this is my way of keeping his shirt tucked in.

I just simply used Fruit of the Loom underwear.  Sam doesn’t usually need his diaper changed at church, so I haven’t bothered to split the bottom on all of them.  But I have on one pair and it is really easy to add velcro so you can still change the diaper. I’ll probably even make him wear these when he is potty trained - it’s just underwear, right?

A few tips if you make these:

  • Remember that you are sewing with elastic, so line up and pin the front, back, and each side and then stretch the elastic when you sew.
  • This wont work well on a shirt that is too short…it will pull the underwear up and show out of the pants.
  • You can also sew the shirt on the outside of the underwear if you are worried about showing.

And there you have it…a Sunday shirt that does not come untucked!
